WHY PENTAGON
The evolution of western Medicine in India started as early as 16th Century with the arrival of East India Company. Prior to the advent of allopathic medicine ayurvedic medicine was widely practiced in the Indian sub-continent. After the arrival of East India Company allopathic medical departments where set up initially to provide health care facilities for the troops and employees of East India Company.
To cope with the growing demand for western medicine in India initially two Medical colleges where commissioned by 1835 in Kolkata and Chennai respectively. These two prestigious Colleges by names of Calcutta Medical College & Madras Medical College are still functional and providing quality medical services to the public. Again in 1854 another medical college by name Agra Medical School now commonly known as Sarojini Naidu Medical College & Hospital was established to acknowledge the acceptance of western medicine in India.
With the wide acceptance western medicine practice in India the number of medical colleges have been growing year on year. In order to meet the demand Government of India subsequently allowed private Organizations to set up medical colleges in India.The Medical Council of India looks after the quality and the standard of medical education offered by medical colleges in India
As of 2017 there are a total of around 456 medical colleges with a combined capacity of 63,985 MBBS seats in India which Include Government as well as private medical colleges. Permission to establish a medical college are given under specified categories as listed below
Government Medical Colleges: Government Medical Colleges are run and managed by the State Government. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the respective states However, 15% seats in each government medical college are reserved under All India Quota for students across the country. The Medical Counselling Committee shall conduct the counselling for these seats separately.
Private Medical Colleges: Private Medical Colleges are usually self-financing non-minority medical colleges. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the centralised counselling authorities of that particular state.
Minority Medical Colleges: Minority medical colleges are private medical colleges categorized as religious and linguistic minorities. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the centralised counselling authorities of that particular state.
Deemed Medical Colleges: Deemed medical colleges in are affiliated to concern deemed universities that are granted autonomous status. These universities enjoy complete autonomy in drafting their MBBS course work for their constituent deemed medical colleges. MBBS admission in these medical colleges shall take place through common counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
